He's certainly worth more than a 4th, so in that respect, Burke won the trade. However, considering that he had a crappy pre-season and lost his job, he was going to be put through waivers and would've certainly been claimed. So at least the Leafs salvaged the pick. While I don't think he's a great loss to the Leafs squad, great pickup for Calgary for what they paid. |

Colborne was disappointing in terms of the lack of improvement since being acquired from Boston. All the young guys and the surplus of centers that we have (along with the bringing on of Raymond) made Joe expendable. At least he'll be better utilized on a team like the Flames |

Colbourne has the tools to be an awesome center... but seems to lack the drive... probably why he fell in the draft.
If he can get that drive going playing for his hometown, he could probably turn things around.

Colin Dambrauskas: Brian Burke Wins First Trade with Toronto Maple Leafs - Colin Dambrauskas
Think you're getting ahead of yourself here....
Colbourne is 23 and is now on his 3rd team. He clearly does not have what it takes. Giving up only a 4th rounder is fine, but come on. The guy has had every opportunity and cant make it. He'll be a career ahl callup. Your still hung up on his "potential". Well some times players don't live up to it.
Let's look back in 2 years and see. I still remember all of the arguments I had with Leaf fans when Burke acquired Brunstrom. He had all this "potential" and was magically going to turn it on with the Leafs. We all know how that panned out. I have a tough time seeing Colbourne magically turning it around. |

Great trade for everybody. Player included which is quite rare. I liked Colborne, but never saw him as more than a 2C. Wasn't defensive enough to bump Bozak or Bolland, wasn't offensive enough to bump Kadri. He needs to be on the top 2 lines so great move by calgary to add depth there (lolEdmonton, really? You can't offer a 3rd rounder to fix your center situation and add depth?...). Hope that kid turns into something great, as a Leafs fan I've moved on to looking forward to Ashton to be affective |

Two teams, Bruins and Leafs have now passed on Joe. Passing twice on a first round choice is a red flag for a prospect. He only got into 16 games because there were better players ahead of him on the Leafs' weak depth chart. Looking further back into his career, choosing North Dakota over the WHL likely says a lot about Joe's game and comfort zone.
Colborne is not very physical and a marginal skater (improved with power skating with Barbara Underhill) that disappears for multiple shifts at a time.
That said, I wish Joe and the Flames good luck this season. I hope Joe proves everyone wrong and has a career season. |

Well, in fairness, I write for both teams and this trade just so happened to involve both.
Now folks, for those who didnt read the entire blog(which I know most go by the title) its quite simple. Leafs moved a guy like Colborne out of necessity. They would have rathered keep him given his cap hit, age, size, and potential Im sure.
To say Colborne is a "scrub" and worth nothing more than a 4th rounder is shortsighted imo. This is a young centerman with a ton of size who has yet to realize his potential at the NHL level. Not sure how so many fans have written him off so soon with such a small sample of games.
No, this wasnt an earth shattering loss for Toronto, but given that I follow and respect both teams, I feel the Flames came out of this one on top and took advantage of Toronto's cap situation.
Not sure theres any other way to look at it, really. Colborne didnt get the chance in Toronto, didnt have a spot on the Leafs roster this year with Bolland there and no cap space, but I feel they might regret it down the road. |

Boston had too much depth for Colborne to play, and despite not having a ton of depth in Toronto, Joe never earned a role as a result of injuries and inconsistency. What many fail to account for is that Joe played a good portion of the season injured and, while he had a few very strong months with the Marlies, his development was set back a little.
Again, Burke wins this trade for me given what they acquired for a 4th rounder. Im sure Nonis wasnt pleased with having to give up on him so early. |

Real no brainer move for a club that is doing their own thing this year. Colborne is at that age where he could break out at any time. For a 4th CGY takes it and runs. |

Not everyone sees things the same, and while I agree that you cant hang on to "potential", I have watched a lot of Colborne play and he's been doing well imo. I suppose if you expect him to be a 1st/2nd line scoring centerman than youre going to be dissapointed, but he can be a strong 3rd line guy who can pot a few and maybe even work his way up to the 2nd line.
Great added depth for the Flames to acquire more youth, more size(despite needing to work on his physical game). |

can you write the Leafs have lost the trade blog now - senstroll
No...somehow Ill need to spin this as the Leafs won
But in all seriousness, I am only writing a Leafs blog once a week and will have my next one up following their season opener against the Habs. Im not sure why fans cant accept that they may have had to give up on what some call the Leafs 2nd best prospect in order to fit under the cap...theres zero chance this happens if they had cap space. You can all thank Liles I guess. |

Until the Leafs make a selection it is far too early to predict a winner or a loser to this trade. - paulr
Thankfully for all of us, it wont be as high profiled as the Kessel trade where we need to compare Phil to Seguin and Hamilton during his entire career |

Burke set this all up while he was still with the Leafs.
Overpay Grabo - compliance buy-out
Overpay Komi - compliance buy out
Overpay Liles/Bring in a coach that won't play him - no compliance buy outs left
Get fired by the Leafs, rejoin Anaheim and then move to the Flames just to steal Colborne...
Burkie is sly like a fox. |
